An interview oF digital artist : KYND

Artist: KYND
DESIGNER AND CREATIVE CODER

Specializing in traditional oil painting, KYND explores the intersections of computer algorithms, handcrafted aesthetics, and physical phenomena. His expertise spans a range of mediums, from statistical visuals to motion film and live performances.

BH: How and when did you start your artistic explorations? How did you discover digital art? What moves you in digital art?

K : I majored in oil painting, so it dates back to my university days. I think I started working more with digital mediums around the year of 2008 when I began using Openframeworks.

For years, I have been creating digital works inspired by hand paintings and drawings. Although I draw with code, there is a strong aspect of introspection regarding the act and experience of drawing rather than the drawing itself. To borrow the words someone wrote for me, it can be described as "an exploration of the boundaries between computer algorithms, handcrafted aesthetics, and physical phenomena.”

I have been fortunate to have been featured in several media outlets and have had opportunities to participate in exhibitions, events, and freelance work.

BH: Do you remember your first project? If so, what was it?

K: The oldest project I have is the digital art piece “Oil Paint”.

BH: Do you have any digital artists you admire?

K: While I have a deep respect for the work of many artists, I don't have a specific individual that I admire above all. Personally, I find myself drawn more towards physical pieces, and lately, I've been exploring exhibitions and books that showcase a variety of artistic styles. Some recent highlights for me include the digital art of David Hockney (whom I consider a digital artist), classic works by Botticelli, and contemporary talents like All right graphics/Yui TAKADA, Haruka Misawa, Laura Owence, and the intriguing creations of Hilma Af Klint

BH: What are your goals for 2024?

K: In the coming year, I would like to expand my skill set and visual language, and create something I haven’t seen before.
