“Utopia 03” by Dirk Koy was exhibited as part of the Moving Image Program at the Adelaide Festival Centre, bringing Dirk’s visionary digital work to one of Australia’s leading cultural stages.

Dirk Koy is a Basel-based artist working across multiple forms of moving image creation. A digital world-builder, his practice samples elements of reality and pushes the boundary between the analogue and the algorithmic, connecting physical environments and hand-drawn gestures with advanced digital technologies. His work often focuses on the moment when reality begins to dissolve into abstraction and the digital acquires an almost tangible presence.

Within Dirk’s visual language, traces are never static. They continue to evolve, subtly challenging our expectations of form as something fixed or complete. Rather than capturing a single decisive moment, his works accumulate temporal traces, revealing how movement leaves behind residues over time. Through continuously unfolding sequences, his videos envision a future that does not progress toward a fixed destination but exists in a state of constant transformation.

Positioned between the digital and the material, Dirk’s works inhabit the tension between these two realms. Acting both as builder and animator, he observes how digital forms emerge, evolve, and resonate within the physical world around him.
